Research Summary:
Focus of my research is utilization of a hazard assessment model for sport fish bioaccumulation in the Detroit River. Hazard assessment model is a food web model that can be useful in assessment of fish exposure to organic contaminants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). I will investigate the effect of temporal and spatial variability of environmental (water and sediment) PCB concentrations on fish bioaccumulation in the Lake Huron-Lake Erie corridor. Hazard assessment model performance will be evaluated using environmental PCB concentrations to predict PCB bioaccumulation by walleye and smallmouth bass. Enclosure of spatially explicit data in the hazard assessment model should provide a better estimate of PCB accumulation in migratory fish, such as walleye. Hazard assessment model with spatially-explicit data will be applied to further assess the causes of fish consumption advisories for the Detroit River and deduce more restrictive guidelines.

Contributions to Research

Participated in Fish Consumption Advisory workshop (August 2008), held at the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research.

Scheduled presentation at IAGLR Conference 2009 (May), which will be held in Ohio.
