Research Title:
Genetic assessment of Babine Lake Rainbow Trout for diversity conservation

Research Summary:
Babine Lake in northern British Columbia is home to a regionally important rainbow trout fishery consisting of two life-history types (small-bodied fish and large-bodied, piscivorous fish).  Through sampling of juvenile and adult fish in the lake and its tributaries, my project will attempt to determine how many reproductive assemblages are present in the system and to assign adult fish from throughout the lake back to a source stock.  Using catch location information will allow me to map where adults from particular stocks are residing in the lake and determine if fish from stock remain clustered or disperse throughout the lake.  Genetic comparisons of large- and small-bodied rainbow trout will allow me to determine if there is a genetic difference between the observed life-history types.  The findings of this project will be used to better manage this valuable resource.
