Research Title:
Use of NaCl brine as a ballast tank treatment technology for transoceanic vessels entering the Great Lakes.

Research Summary:
My research focuses on the use of NaCl brine to treat ballast tanks to eliminate all the organisms in the tanks. This method of treatment may be used as a back-up for vessels that could not comply with ballast water exchange regulation. Many non-indigenous species (NIS) are transported by ballast tanks and the point of treating the tanks is to prevent NIS from invading the Great Lakes. I will do experiments on six ballast on-board (BOB) ships and six no ballast on-board (NOBOB) ships and determine the viability of the organisms before and after the brine treatment to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment.
